HOW TO PLAY
Simple rules. Thoughtful moves.
2048 is a number puzzle: combine tiles with the same number to make bigger ones. There is no timer. Take your time and aim to create a single 2048 tile.
Your goal: make one 2048 tile
Each game starts with two tiles. Combine two 2s to make a 4, two 4s to make an 8, and so on. The numbers below show the progression. Different numbers cannot merge.
In Playing Cards, labels progress from 2 through 10, then J, Q, K, A and Joker. Q represents 2048, A represents 8192 and Joker (JK) represents 16384, followed by JK×2, JK×4 and beyond. Merging and scoring follow the same rules as the other themes.
Karakusa uses Japanese unit symbols: 2 = 一, 4 = 十, 8 = 百, 16 = 千, and so on. Match two identical symbols to advance to the next one; 2048 is 穣. These symbols represent tile levels. Scoring and merging follow the same rules as every other theme.
First, learn how to move
Phone or tablet
Swipe across the board in the direction you want to move: up, down, left, or right.
Computer
Click the board, then use the arrow keys. You can also use W for up, A for left, S for down, and D for right.
On-screen arrows
Use the arrow buttons below the board if you prefer. They work just like swipes and keyboard controls.
What happens in one move?
Every tile moves together as far as possible in the direction you choose. You do not move just one tile. Select steps 1, 2, and 3 below to see a move to the left.
ONE MOVE, STEP BY STEP
1. Before the move
The top row contains 2, empty, 2, and 4. Now move everything to the left.
Points gained this move: 0Each tile can merge only once per move
Pairs merge starting from the edge you move toward. A tile created by a merge cannot merge again during that move. Compare the two examples below.
Four 2s form two separate 4s, earning 4 + 4 = 8 points. They do not immediately become a single 8.
Only the first two 2s merge. The new 4 and the original 4 cannot merge until a later move, so this move earns four points.
- 01
How scoring works
Every merged tile adds its new value to your score. A 2 + 2 merge earns 4 points; a 4 + 4 merge earns 8. Make both in one move to earn 12 points. Sliding without merging earns no points.
- 02
When new tiles appear
After a move that changes the board, one new 2 (90%) or 4 (10%) appears in a random empty cell. If nothing moves, no new tile appears and your score stays the same.
- 03
When you reach 2048
A celebration appears the first time you create 2048. Choose “Keep playing” to continue with the same board and score. You can aim for 4096 and even larger tiles.
- 04
When is the game over?
The game ends when the board is full and no equal neighboring tiles can merge horizontally or vertically. A full board can still be played if a merge is possible. Start a new board to try again.
Three things to try as you learn
- Keep your largest tile in a corner
Choosing a home for your largest tile makes it easier to plan. Try arranging the next-largest numbers beside it.
- Leave room to move
You do not have to make every available merge immediately. Look at which cells will be empty after your move so the board does not get crowded.
- Pause after each new tile
New 2s and 4s can appear in different places each turn. Check the board between moves instead of repeating a direction quickly, and you may spot more opportunities.
Board sizes, autosave, and personal bests
4×4 is the original board; 5×5 gives you more room. Both use the same rules. Each size automatically keeps its own board and personal best. Use “Back to title” and “Continue saved game” to resume. “New game” replaces the saved board for that size, while keeping your personal best and trophies.
Online rankings
Optional all-time score rankings for 4×4. Start a new game while opted in and finish it to submit. Abandoned games, 5×5 boards, and games started before opting in are excluded.
The server replays every move to verify results. Public seeds cannot fully prevent automated play. Rankings support up to 200,000 moves per game; longer games can continue locally.
